St. James Art Fair

New Work

Here are a couple of new pieces I will be showing this weekend. I'm excited about this series made with Sumi ink and mixed media on rice paper and mounted on aluminum. Both pieces are 24 x 18 in.

Open Studio Weekend

I'm pleased to announce that my studio will be part of the Louisville Visual Arts Association Open Studio Weekend this Sat. and Sun., Nov. 9th &10th! This will also be my Unofficial Studio Opening since moving into my new space in the Aztec Flooring warehouse in Old Louisville this June.

And don't miss the Launch Party, Friday, Nov. 8 at Cressman Center for Visual Arts, 100 E. Main Street, 6–9pm. One piece of art from each of the more than 70 participating artists will be on display. The party is free and open to the public. Meet the artists, buy a ticket for the tour, and plan your studio visits.

The media has been giving excellent coverage, including the front page of last Sunday's Arts section in the Courier-Journal and a live artist interview today at noon on WHAS, with more interviews to come.

Proceeds help fund scholarships for 960 students enrolled at the Hite Art Institute and LVAA’s Children’s Fine Art Classes (CFAC). New Studio Space in Old Louisville

My new studio, downtown at  620 Myrtle St., continues to amaze me. I can actually work on multiple projects at once! I've only been here a little over a week so there is a lot more to be done. Let me know if you will be in the area and please visit.

“Pairallels” Crosses Generational Lines at JCC Patio Gallery,
June 16-July 16
What happens when two groups of artists across generational lines are asked to finish each others’ work? Twenty-two artists, 11 representing established artists from the Artists’ Breakfast Group and 11 from a younger collective of artists representing the Louisville Artists Syndicate were brought together by curator Stacey Reason to answer that question. The results will be on display at the JCC Patio Gallery (3600 Dutchmans Lane) June 16-July 16. An opening reception including comments from the curator and some of the artists will be held on June 16 from 2-4 p.m.

The Louisville Visual Art Association (LVAA) has an innovative promotional initiative for artist members called "artebella." It's a daily featured artist page that is archived for a year. My page was shown April 24, 2013. I think they've done a great job putting this together.

Studio Visit

Several weeks ago I was visiting friends in the Asheville area of North Carolina. While there, I had the privilege of visiting the home and studios of sculptor Shane Snider and  his wife, artist/educator, Tamie Beldue. I was introduced to Shane's work through his website by searching for artists who use concrete - one of my obsessions. Here are links to their websites:

Shane's recent work beautifully combines wood and concrete into elegant figures. I wish I had taken more photos :-(

Encre: Rouge, Blanc, Noire

I am excited to be part of the invitational illustration/drawing exhibit: "Encre: Rouge, Blanc, Noire," opening this Friday, October 19th, at 7pm. at Grifins Modern Motel, 199 E. Loudon Ave. in Lexington, Ky. This should be a great show, with over 90 artists, lovingly curated by Ed Franklin, Georgia Henkel, and Giles Glasscock. All works were created using red, white, and black ink. The support media was not specified but pieces were also required to be 18 x 12 in. (appx.) and suitable for hanging.

Each artist has contributed two pieces, so there will be lots to look at. The exhibit will be up for three days only! The opening (and party) is this Friday, with music by Casino Versus Japan, and  the space will be open Saturday the 20th and Sunday the 21st from 12-5 so you can go back for another look.

This is one on my entries, "Focus," sumi and acrylic inks on washi paper, mounted on gessoed board, with varnish.

New Series

Grace under Pressure from HorseMania 2010

This is a technique I have been wanting to explore further since I did a horse this way for "HorseMania 2010" in Lexington, KY.

The new pieces are relatively small, 9.25" square and about 3" deep. I want to see if this can also be successfully translated into larger work. It is interesting to see the effect of scale on a work of art. That is one reason it is so important to see art in person rather than just in reproduction, especially web reproduction.

These pieces are currently on view at SCOUT on Market in downtown Louisville, KY.

Exibit in Roanoke, VA

I recently traveled to Roanoke, VA to install an exhibit of my work at Gallerie Francois II. I had not been to Roanoke before and was pleasantly surprised to find a very nice section of galleries and cafes, along with a gem of an art museum, downtown near Galerie Francois. The official opening is not until April 6 during the First Friday gallery walk. We installed the show early because of scheduling issues. I have to thank fellow artist and friend Helene Steene, also from Lexington, who introduced me to the gallery and helped hang the show. She has some beautiful pieces hanging in the gallery as well. And of course, much gratitude goes to Francois Tor, for giving me the opportunity to exhibit in his gallery.

Outside My Window

Fresh from the oven, 23" x 24" acrylic, Tyvek pastel and mixed media on panel. No tile yet - although the title of this post is a good candidate.

I've been trying to paint more from personal everyday experience. All the Humming Birds have arisen from an "encounter" I had last summer. It all turned out OK, if a little startling. I was watching one from my doorway when it turned and zoomed, in three short spurts, to within about four feet of my face. We both paused for about 10 long seconds, then he was off. Makes you wonder - which is kind of a main point of my paintings. The Passion Flower Vine grows on the fence behind the Scarlet Sage the bird was sipping.

I'm pleased to have two pieces in this show at the M S Rezny Studio/Gallery, 903 Manchester Street, Lexington, KY. Dates are January 9th - February 3rd, 2012. The exhibit is definitely worth seeing.

Quoting the the exhibit statement:

"The juried exhibit, notBIG a small art competition, features works in any media that is no than larger than 12 inches in any direction. Jack Girard, a professor of Art at Transylvania University, served as juror. notBIG generated 381 submissions from 112 artists, spanning 32 states and 8 countries. Girard selected 62 works for the exhibit.
Girard believes that, 'the works here represent current trends in some arenas of picture/object-making... I think we have here a dense, exciting, and intense exhibition of real gems-first-rate works that insist on a rather intimate relationship between artist and viewer.... These are small works and there are a lot of them, but they are nonetheless monumental in conceptual and emotive power.'"

Owensboro Museum of Fine Art

I am fortunate to have this painting included in the exhibit “River Country 2011”, at the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art in Owensboro, Kentucky. The dates are Dec. 2 - 31.

This is a national juried competition sponsored by Owensboro Medical Health System to acquire works of art for the hospital’s new regional medical facility.

From over 700 entries, 60 works were selected for exhibition by juror, Peter Morrin, Director Emeritus, JB Speed Art Museum, Louisville.

Recent Work

I've been doing a lot of birds lately. I'm moving toward including more representational elements in larger mostly abstract work, but I'm enjoying these small studies on their own. They bring together several techniques I've been trying to combine for awhile. All are 12 x 12 in. wood panels.

Looking and Drawing

I've been drawing more (and posting less) lately. I'm still looking for a way to combine some of the techniques I've used in the past into a new synthesis. Creativity, in my opinion, is not really about making anything new - all the elements and principles and potentials are already in place. But as we explore new ways of relating and perceiving we create an inner experience of both cause and effect. We just happen to leave bits of physical evidence here and there.

But that is getting beyond the subject of this post. All this searching I've been doing has put a serious crimp in my painting productivity. So I'm looking to drawing to get back in the flow. Drawing is a great way to focus your attention outside of yourself.

This drawing was done with sumi ink using crude split-reed brushes and pens that I make from dried grasses and bamboo. Broader washes are done with a traditional Chinese calligraphy brush. It's one of my favorite techniques. I love the unpredictability. And I think crows are pretty cool too. The second version is digitally colored and composited with part of an old painting for the background.
